Halifax, Garrison Records : The city of Halifax was established as a garrison town in 1749 by the British government. The garrison was set up as a military stronghold to counter the French fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island. The garrison was situated on a drumlin (Citadel Hill) which provided the soldiers with a vista from which to observe the harbour approaches. The fortress, which was never attacked, was garrisoned by the British Army until 1906 and by Canadian Forces during the First and Second World Wars.
