The material copied comprises: account, 1620-1670, of the colonization of Avalon in Newfoundland by Sir George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore ([1580]-1632), and of his efforts and those of his sons to plant Maryland (No. 2, ff. 24-26).

Accounts rendered for Captain Nicholas Webb's Company at New York for service against the French and Indians at Albany in 1687-1688, certified, 1689, by Thomas Dongan, later 2nd Earl of Limerick (1634-1715), Governor of New York, 1682-1688 (ff. 1-2v); excerpts relating to the military and ecclesiastical affairs of Newfoundland, 1698-1705, which include matters connected with the supplying and staffing of the military establishment, 1698-1705, and the appointment and payment of clergy, 1699 and 1701 (ff. 3-43 selections).

Letters, orders, receipts, warrants, accounts, bills of exchange, memorials, etc., relating to many areas of North America and the Bahamas, and arranged chronologically, 1718-1796. Among the writers are: Captain Joseph Brant (1742-1807), General Sir Henry Clinton ([1738]-1795), General Thomas Gage (1721-1787), [Lieutenant-Governor Henry Hamilton (d. 1796)], fur-trader James McGill (1744-1813), Vicar-general Étienne Montgolfier (1712-1791), and German-American military expert Baron von Steuben (1730-1794).

The discovery of the New World in the fifteenth century opened a new era of colonization for all the maritime nations of Europe, of which Britain was one. As her commercial rivals were all striving to stake claims to the new territories and trade routes, Britain too had to enter the race and establish colonies, or plantations as they were called, in the New World. The Spanish and Portuguese, who were first in the field, concentrated on South America. As a result, later comers such as Britain and France had to make their settlements in the colder and less hospitable territories of North America. Much of the impetus for colonization came originally from individuals but the need for larger resources soon involved the government, which gradually devised organs of state to deal with the matter.

From 1695 to 1782, British colonial affairs were under the control of the Board of Trade and Plantations. In the eighteenth century, reports from the colonies were regularly sent to the home government in Britain. Those that were of sufficient importance or interest appear to have been copied and sent to the sovereign.

The manuscript collection of Sir Hans Sloane, Bart. (1660-1753), physician to Queen Anne and George II, was purchased from his executors in 1753 by the Act of Parliament (26 Geo. II, cap. 22) that also established the British Museum (now the British Library) to be their repository. They are catalogued there as a separate collection numbered as Sloane MSS. 1-4100 and the Additional Manuscripts acquired later receive subsequent numbers in the same sequence., Sloane Manuscripts 3662 contains a collection of historical accounts of various colonies. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed two small excerpts from it. Additional Manuscripts 9747, which was added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1834, is a collection of papers relative to the English dominions in America, 1698-1705. In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed a number of small excerpts from it. Additional Manuscripts 15485, which was added to the holdings of the British Library in 1845, was transcribed by the National Archives of Canada, ca. 1884., Additional Manuscripts 24322, which was added to the holdings of the British Library in 1861, is a miscellaneous collection of letters and papers relating to the American colonies and the Bahamas, 1718-1796. At some time between 1881 and 1955, probably around the turn of the century, the National Archives of Canada transcribed a number of selections. These were bound together with material from Add. MSS. 6865, Add. MSS. 15491, and Church Briefs B.VI.8, 6 Geo. III, in a volume entitled Miscellaneous Papers that originally constituted Volume 377 of the old "M" Series. This volume was unbound in 1990 and its contents dispersed to their separate locations. A second copy of James McGill's letter of 5 July 1785, ff. 106-109v, which was transcribed in 1929, was never bound with the rest of the excerpts.
