Fonds consists of a diary kept by Henry Chichester Hart on the Nares Expedition, beginning 29 May 1876, as well as a photocopy of H.C. Hart's article entitled "The Botany of the British Polar Expedition, 1875-1876", in the Journal of Botany, British and Foreign for 1880.

Hart, Henry Chichester, 1847-1908 : H.C. Hart, botanist, was the son of the noted Irish mathematician Sir Andrew Searle Hart. He was educated as a botanist at Trinity College in Dublin. He served as a naturalist on the British Polar Expedition under G.S. Nares in 1875-76, and in 1883, took part in the Palestine Expedition organized by the Palestine Exploration fund. Hart wrote numerous publications on the flora of Ireland and material collected on the Nares and Palestine expeditions. He also edited several works of Ben Johnson and some 30 Arden editions of Shakespeare's plays.
