Its first Canadian local was chartered in the spring of 1937 at the Westinghouse plant in Hamilton, Ontario. At the 1937 international convention, Canada was declared a separate District with the right to elect a Vice-President of the international union. The Canadian delegates to the convention elected C.S. Jackson, a volunteer CIO organizer in the electrical industry, to that position. The Canadian section, District 5, held its first council meeting immediately after the convention and elected an executive with C.S. Jackson as President.
The UE played an important role in the 1940 merger of the Canadian CIO unions with the All-Canadian Congress of Labour that established the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL). During the war period, the union expanded considerably, bringing approximately 13,000 workers under contract and it continued this advance in the post-war years. Ideological differences with other more conservative unions resulted in the expulsion of the UE from both the CCL and the CIO in 1949. The CCL and the CIO established a rival union, the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, which endeavoured to win local unions away from the UE. In 1957 the Canadian section of the UE became an autonomous body governed by its own constitution, affiliated to the international union. The UE survived this period of ostracism from the mainstream labour movement, and in 1972 it affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress.
C.S. Jackson retired as national president in 1980, and Dick Barry was elected as his successor. Barry continued in this role until the UE merged with the Canadian Auto Workers in 1992.Finding aid:Textual records (Electronic) Part 1 describes the contents of microfilm reels M-2336 to M-2364. Additional originals were received: in 1975, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1990 from the UE; and in 1996 from the Canadian Auto Workers, which had assumed custody of the records after the 1992 merger.
The UE merged with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) in 1992. In 2013, the CAW merged with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP) to form Unifor.Related material:For records of members, employees and other people associated with United Electrical, see: Clarence Shirley (C.S.)
