Great Britain. Board of Customs : Customs was the name which came to be applied to toll paid on merchandise going out of or entering England. In the thirteenth century, what had previously been a customary payment was fixed. At the Restoration in 1660, the customs were reorganized and the "book of rates" was revised. During his long administration, 1721-1742, Sir Robert Walpole strove to reform the system, but was only able to effect a very partial improvement. In 1742, the commission of customs for Great Britain was divided and nine commissioners were appointed for England and Wales, and five for Scotland.

Custodial history:

Additional Manuscripts 8829-8833, which were added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library), ca. 1831, contain miscellaneous material relating to the customs. In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed two small excerpts from a list of Commissioners and Officers of H.M. Customs in England and the Plantations with their respective salaries as they stood at Christmas 1744 (Add. MSS. 8831, ff. 128, 129).
