Harlein Manuscripts 167 is a volume containing a collection of tracts and papers relating mainly to maritime affairs, customs, etc., bound together. Harlein Manuscripts 306 is a similar volume of tracts and papers relating chiefly to trade, customs and navigation bound together. Two items were copied by the National Archives totalling 9 pages of transcripts.

Includes a document entitled: "Concerninge a passage to be made from our Northe sea into the southe sea as shall appeare": an argument promoting a route to the South Seas and China via a northwest passage rather than by way of the Straits of Magellan, 7 pages.

Includes an item entitled "Declaratio quo Cursu sit navigandum ex Boreali mari in Australe ut sic perveniatur in Regiones quae Sepango et Mangi vocantur, et inde in Catayam et Molouchas, ubi Aromata petuntur": a statement regarding the passage from the north sea into the south sea in order to reach Japan, Manchuria, China and the Moluccas, where spices are to be obtained, 2 pages.

Custodial history:

The Harleian Manuscripts were collected by Robert Harley (1661-1724) and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 1st and 2nd Earls of Oxford respectively. In 1753, they were purchased from the Countess of Oxford and Mortimer and the Duchess of Portland, by the British Museum (now the British Library). They are kept as a separate collection catalogued as Harley MSS. 1-7660., In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed one small excerpt from each of the volumes.
