Fonds consists of selections of Canadian interest from the general official correspondence of First Lord of the Treasury, Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle (1693-1768). Photocopies, 17 pages; transcripts, 6 pages.

Includes letters exchanged between Major-General James Wolfe (1727-1759) and his Brigadier-Generals, Robert Monckton (1726-1782), George Townshend (1724-1807), and James Murray (1721-1794), in the fortnight before the capture of Quebec, [29] August - 12 September 1759. The correspondence reveals the disagreement on strategy and the somewhat strained relations between Wolfe and his subordinates. (Add MSS. 32895, 11 pages.)

Also includes: letter, 9 May 1761, to the Duke of Newcastle from the Governor of Quebec, Brigadier-General James Murray (1721-1794), outlining the means by which he has raised money (including borrowing from friends) to provide for the "Civil Contingencies" and to support his "Dignity as Governor and Commander in Chief of ten Battalions" (ff. 443-446v). Lengthy private letter, 9 May 1761, to the Duke of Newcastle from John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford (1710-1771), urging acceptance of the French overtures for peace and for British moderation at the peace negotiations. His observations on the North American situation and remarks on the Newfoundland fisheries are of specifically Canadian interest (ff. 449-452v). 6 pages.

Pelham-Holles, Thomas, 1693-1768 : British Statesman.

Thomas Pelham (1693-1768) was born on 21 July 1693. He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Pelham, 4th Baronet and 1st Baron Pelham of Laughton (1650-1712), by his second wife, Lady Grace, youngest daughter of Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare. He added the name and arms of Holles to those of Pelham in July 1711, on succeeding (as adopted heir) to the bulk of the estates of his uncle, John Holles, Duke of Newcastle. He succeeded as 2nd Baron Pelham of Laughton in 1712, was created Viscount Pelham and Earl of Clare in 1714, and Duke of Newcastle in 1715. He was Lord Chamberlain, 1717-1724; Secretary of State for the Southern Department, 1724-1746; Secretary of State for the Northern Department, 1746-1754; First Lord of the Treasury, 1754-1756 and 1757-1762; and Lord Privy Seal, 1765-1766.

Additional Manuscripts 32679-33201 were presented to the British Museum (now the British Library), in 1886, by the Earl of Chichester [either Henry Thomas Pelham (1804-1886), 3rd Earl of Chichester, or his son, Walter John Pelham, 4th Earl of Chichester (1838-1902)]. They contain correspondence and papers of the Pelham family and of other allied families. Among them are many manuscripts pertaining to Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle. These include Additional Manuscripts 32686-32992 which constitute 307 volumes of his official correspondence., On three occasions, copies of small excerpts from the General Correspondence series in the Newcastle papers were made by the National Archives of Canada. An excerpt from Volume 237 (Add. MSS. 32922, ff. 443-446v) was transcribed at some time probably quite early in the twentieth century, although it was only in 1978 that it was added to this inventory. At a [later] date, prior to 1955, negative photostat copies were obtained of another small excerpt from the same volume (ff. 449-452v). In 1958, negative photostat copies of a small excerpt from Volume 210 of the same fonds (Add. MSS. 32895, ff. 89-94v) were also obtained.
