The Post 41 class or series, created in 1807, is the "Volumes" class corresponding to the "Papers" class, Post 39, which was also created in 1807. These classes along with Post 29 and Post 34 contain the core policy and administrative files on the packet services between 1807 and 1920. These records are annotated with the Postmasters' initialled decisions, and sometimes with brief comments, cross-referenced to related files, or "Cancelled" stamps (apparently indicating the destruction of the corresponding file in Post 39). A copy of each report is usually also found in the corresponding Papers class if it has survived.

Post 41 contains six entry books of copies of the record of formal reports from the Secretary To The Post Office to the Postmasters-General on packet boat services and related overseas mail arrangements, dated 1807-1837. The topics covered are the same as those listed for Post 29. The National Archives has microfilmed all of Post 41. This material is available on microfilm reels A-1232 to A-1234.

Formerly inventoried as MG 40 L, Post 41.

Custodial history:

The relationship between Post 39 and Post 41, two parallel sets of records, is unclear. Topics of supposedly minor importance registered in the Minutes (29 and 34) sometimes also appear in the policy files (39 and 41) and vice versa, but the rationale for allocation to one or the other series and the extent of the overlap has not been determined.

The reports are arranged in a rough chronological series according to the numbers of the Papers subject files from which each originated, and are indexed by subject within each volume.
