The series documents British North American postal systems and transatlantic mail services, n.d., 1699-1848, and 1918 as well as the British Post Office staffing procedures, n.d., and 1907-1912. Most of the records are dated between 1820 and 1850. This material is available on microfilm reels C-12858 to C-12863 and C-12882 to C-12887.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid No. 392 is divided into four parts: MSS0392-1 is a chronologically arranged descriptive list, n.d., 1678 to 1845. MSS0392-2 is a chronologically arranged descriptive list, 1845 to 1848, 1908 to 1912, and 1918. MSS0392-3 contains a microfilm shelf list for the transcripts which includes volume number, outside dates, and microfilm reel number. It also provides a descriptive list of the transcripts as follows: page number, date of document, author, recipient and subject matter. Appropriate descriptive information in Part 3 has also been microfilmed on the reels at the beginning of each volume. MSS0392-4 is a nominal index to parts 1, 2 and 3. MSS0392 (90: Open)

General note:

Approximately half of the transcriptions are annotated with file references or dates which link them to the originals.
These records were formerly inventoried as MG 40 L (transcripts).

Custodial history:

The transcripts were prepared by staff of the National Archives of Canada from documents in the General Post Office before their reorganization into post classes. Some of those original documents were later microfilmed and are available as one of the post classes. Other original documents were not microfilmed and are only found in the General Post Office's postal archive.

Reproduction note:

The National Archives of Canada holds microfilm copies of many of the original records from which the transcripts were made.
