Fonds consists of personal records, including correspondence, speeches, articles, pamphlets, and papers written by Dr. MacDonald, 1926-1970 (originals); minutes of meetings, correspondence, constitutions, membership lists, and financial statements relating to the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, 1926-1970 (originals).

The fonds also contains photographs illustrating views of the Tidal Bore, Moncton, N.B. and various events in A.E. MacDonald's career, including several international congresses on ophthalmology, 1910-1960.

Fonds consists of 16 maps and plans pertaining primarily to western Canada. They include maps of Manitoba and North-West Territories showing soil classes and townships, census map of Saskatchewan along with maps of Yukon River and town plan of Regina. There are plans of Guelph and a railway map of Ontario and Quebec.

MacDonald, Alexander E., 1892-1976 : Dr. Alexander E. MacDonald, ophthalmologist, graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1916 and specialized in ophthalmology. The author of over fifty papers which have appeared in international, American and Canadian ophthalmological journals, he has also maintained executive positions in the International, American, and Canadian Ophthalmological Societies. During the mid-1940s, he was instrumental in establishing certificates of specialization in ophthalmology under the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and has been the ophthalmological consultant for the Toronto General Hospital and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
