Fonds consists of correspondence with Lord Aylmer, 1830-1834, 130 pages (volume 1); correspondence, 1818-1834; letter from George Colls, Engineer at the Naval Yard, 26 September 1832, 2 pages (volume 1); photograph copies of correspondence relating to the duties of the acting commissioner and personal correspondence of Barrie to his mother, photocopies 2.5 cm (Volume 2); and a letterbook containing copies of orders and instructions issued by Barrie, 1819-1825 and by Captain H.D. Byng, who commanded in Barrie's absence, 1825-1827, 5 cm (Volume 3).

Barrie, Robert, 1774-1840 : Robert Barrie was born at Sanquhar, N.B., served in the navy during the Napoleonic Wars and in 1819 was appointed acting commissioner of the dockyard in Kingston. He was responsible for superintending all naval and victualling establishments on the Lakes. In 1827 he became commodore of that station, where he remained until the dissolution of the establishment in 1834. Barrie became a rear-admiral in 1837 and a K.C.B. in 1840.
