Collection consists (chiefly) of notes taken by James Reid on civil and criminal cases which he heard in the Court of Appeal, the Court of King's Bench, and the Special Court of Oyer & Terminer in Montreal and Three Rivers, during the years 1807 to 1837. The papers also include a legal digest, James Reid's Opinion on the Judicial System (1824), and a few documents from his legal career. Originals, 18 pages; photocopies, 71 pages; transcripts, 30 pages. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-8558 to M-8572.

Reid, James, 1769-1848 : James Reid, judge, was born in Scotland. He emigrated to Canada and studied law with his uncle, John Reid, in Montreal, before being admitted to the Bar of Lower Canada in 1794. Reid was appointed a Justice of the Court of King's Bench for the District of Montreal in 1807, and was made Chief Justice of that Court in 1825. He retired in 1838.

General note:

The photocopies were acquired from Warren Baker in 1985. The original documents, formerly part of the Miscellaneous Documents collection (MG 55/24, 16/34), were received in 1920 and 1945. The transcript was donated in 1992 by R.M. Bond of Montreal.
