The fonds consists of five series relating to the aid work undertaken by the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada. Included in the series are general correspondence, reports, financial records, project files as well as other records documenting both the aid work and the efforts undertaken by USCC to raise money to support its aid programs, 1940-1988.

The fonds consists of photographic material depicting services undertaken by the Unitarian Service Committee to relieve and improve living conditions by housing, feeding, clothing, educating, providing medical assistance, and aiding community development projects in Greece, the Middle East, Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Korea and Vietnam, 1961-1979. Also depicted is Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova, Executive Director of the Unitarian Service Committee, with various women and children in United Nations Relief and Works Agency refugee camps in Lebanon, 1966; Dr. Hitschmanova with a small girl in Indonesia, 1961, and in India and Korea; Unitarian Service Committee projects and tours in India and Korea; loading U.S.C. shipment to Calcutta aboard Canadian Forces Aircraft.

The fonds also consists of sound recordings of radio spots, music, and information from different countries, 1945-1978.

The fonds also consists of films depicting work done and aid given by Canada and the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada to developing countries, 1940-1979.

Unitarian Service Committee of Canada : The Unitarian Service Committee of Canada (U.S.C.), an international relief organization, was founded in 1945 by Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova to help Europe's child victims at the end of W.W.II. The U.S.C. is a non-denominational, non-political and non-racial voluntary relief and development agency which raises funds and supplies for the needy around the world.

Since 1945 the U.S.C. has provided care to thousands of children in U.S.C. sponsored homes in such countries as Austria, Bangladesh, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Lesotho, Nepal and Switzerland. U.S.C. scholarship programmes have been offered to the most promising among the most indigent students in Botswana, India, Korea, Lesotho, the Middle East and Swaziland. U.S.C. vocational training projects have been launched in Botswana, Greece, India, Indonesia, Korea, Lesotho, Swaziland and Vietnam. Family planning programmes have been sponsored by the U.S.C. in Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea and Lesotho.

Dr. Hitschmanova, born in Prague Czechoslovakia, studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and graduated from the University of Prague where she received a doctorate in Philosophy. She holds a diploma in Journalism and took post-graduate studies in political science. She has accepted many international honours on behalf of the countless Canadians who make the work of the U.S.C. possible through their contributions of money and time. In December 1979, she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.
