Parkhurst, Anthony, fl. 1561-1583 : Merchant explorer and advocate of English Settlement in Newfoundland.

Anthony Parkhurst (fl. 1561-1583), was a Bristol merchant who became an early entrepreneur in the Newfoundland fishery, 1575-1578. He accompanied his ship to Newfoundland each year and explored the northeastern and southeastern parts of the island personally, in addition to questioning the French and Portuguese fishermen about it. He formed the opinion that the English should colonize Newfoundland and expressed his views in letters, 1577-1578, to an unknown courtier [possibly the poet, Sir Edward Dyer (d. 1607)], and to Richard Hakluyt.

The Lansdowne Manuscripts were collected by William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne and 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1737-1805). They were purchased from his executors in 1807 by the British Museum (now the British Library), where they are kept as a separate collection numbered Lansdowne 1-1245. Lansdowne MSS. 100 is a collection of 25 manuscripts, most of which relate to overseas voyages and related matters. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada made a typescript of one small excerpt from it (Lansdowne MSS. 100, No. 10, ff. 95-96v), that related to Newfoundland.
