Order of St. John : Tracing its origin to a seventh century pilgrim hospital, the modern Order of St. John was established in 1831 in England, dedicated to the ideals of charity and service to suffering humanity. To achieve these ideals three foundations were created, the St. Johns Ambulance Association, the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and the St. John Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem. During the winter of 1882-1883, first-aid classes were established in Quebec City. The order spread throughout Canada and the Canadian branch of the St. John Ambulance Association was formed in 1910 with headquarters in Ottawa. In 1914, the association was incorporated by Act of Parliament.
