Cahokia (Ill.) : The town of Cahokia was established in 1699 at a village of the Tamaroa Indians. At first it was primarliy a base of operations for merchant traders, trappers, and missionaries. It was not until 1731 that the land was purchased from the Indians for the purpose of laying out a town and commonfields.

Kaskaskia (Ill.) : The town of Kaskaskia was founded by the French in the early 18th century. When the territory of Illinois was established in 1818, Kaskaskia was chosen as its capital. Shortly thereafter in 1820, the capital was moved to Vandalia. Kaskaskia however, remained an important link to western expansion.
