Fonds consists of a diary, regulations, work sheets, standing orders, nominal rolls notebook, scrapbook, repatriation message and roll of recovered personnel, concerning the Shamshuipo and Omine Prisoner of War Camps, 1942-1945; newspaper clippings, articles and copies of photographs, 1940-1966; a 1945 sketch, original, 1942-1945, 8 cm and photocopy, n.d., 1937-1980, 0.5 cm; miscellaneous and military papers, original, 1928-1952 0.7 cm; personal correspondence, original, 1937-1946, 1970, 4 cm; publications, original, n.d., 1966, 1977, 0.5 cm.

The fonds also contains photographs of Sgt. Ebdon, Royal Rifles of Canada, Québec City, 1040; Lockheed "Hudson" aircraft, R.C.A.F., Gander, Newfoundland, 1940; wreckage of Lockheed "Hudson" aircraft in which Sir Fredrick Banting died, 1941; Ebdon at a ceremony marking the Battle of Hong Kong, 8 December 1966.

Also included is a drawing of F.W. Ebdon and Geoff Tyson as prisoners of war in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, August, 1945 and a head and shoulder pencil sketch by Geoff Tyson of Company Sargeant Major Frank W. Ebdon, ca. 1942-1945.

Biography/Administrative history:

Ebdon, Frank William, 1901- : Frank William Ebdon, soldier, was born in England, and served with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade in the First World War. He immigrated to Canada in 1922 and worked on farms in Saskatchewan before travelling east to find employment in the paper mills of Donnacona, Que.

He enlisted for active service in 1940 with the Royal Rifles of Canada and served in Newfoundland before his unit was despatched, as part of "C Force" in October, 1941, to reinforce the British garrison at the Crown Colony of Hong Kong. Acting Company Sergeant-Major Ebdon was wounded and taken prisoner on 25 December, 1941, the day Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese.

From January 1942 to January 1943 Ebdon was held at Shamshuipo and North Point Camps near Hong Kong. In January, 1943 he was transferred to Omine Camp near Kawasaki, Kyushu, Japan. Ebdon was liberated in September, 1945 and arrived back in Canada in October 1945. Following the war Ebdon resided at Delhi, Ont.
