Evidence books and other records of the Commission of Inquiry into the state of the Public Departments appointed at the request of Parliament in 1839 form the series B 30. Records relating to the inquiry into the Toronto Election Riot of 1841 form the series B 33. The original evidence books of the Financial and Departmental Commission of 1862-1863 form a small series B 35. Records accumulated by the several Commissions of inquiry into the affairs of the University of Toronto forming series B 12 complement records in series C 1.

Upper Canada and Canada West. Commissions of Inquiry or Administration : Relatively few Commissions of Inquiry were appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, 1791-1841. Their reports and other records generally must be sought in large series, such as the Upper Canada Sundries. Similarly, the majority of reports and other records for Commissions of Inquiry appointed by the Governor-in-Chief of Canada, 1841-1867, may be found with the Civil Secretary's correspondence files (RG 7, G 20). How the records of certain commissions came to form independent series, and whether those series contain all surviving records of the Commissioners, has yet to be determined.

Records of the inquiry into the conduct of Colonel John Prince in pursuing traitors (RG 5, B 39) are described with records of the Rebellions of 1837-1838.

The arrangement of the records within each series generally follows the system established by the Commissioners. The shelf lists in the Guide for RG 5 serve as a finding aid for these series. Some evidence books are prefaced by tables of contents.

Availability of other formats note:

None of these series has been microfilmed; however, a copy of the Report of the inquiry into the state of the public departments is found in Colonial Office 42, volume 472, avaialble on microfilm reels B-363 and B-364. The published texts of the Reports of the Financial and Departmental Commission should be used in place of the original evidence books, pending conservation of RG 5, B 35.
