Fonds contains the following: a letter dated 2 April 1572 from William Cecil, Lord Burghley, Minister of State at Westminster, to Francis Walsingham, Ambassador Resident at Paris, commending his diligence in pressing the French King about Troilus de La Roche, marquis de La Roche-Mesgouez ([1540]-1606), later viceroy of New France, who took the son of James Fitz Morris as hostage from the Irish rebels (No. 120, ff. 205v-206).

Letter, 14 September 1572, from Francis Walsingham, Ambassador Resident at Paris, to Secretary of State Sir Thomas Smith, giving an account of what passed at a late audience he had had with the Queen Mother. Topics discussed included her inquiries about his scruples against the marriage of Queen Elizabeth to the duc d'Alençon, and her declaration that the King, her son, would not permit the Protestants the public exercize of their religion. Also, that La Roche, who was employed in the enterprise of Ireland, had gone to Rochelle (No. 175, ff. 295-299). Transcripts, 6 pages.

Walsingham, Francis, Sir, 1530?-1590 : Statesman.

Sir Francis Walsingham ([1530]-1590) collected foreign intelligence for William Cecil, Lord Burghley (1520-1598), Minister of State, and became the chief of the English secret service under Elizabeth I. In 1570, he was sent to Paris as ambassador to negotiate a French alliance and Elizabeth's marriage with Henri, duc d'Anjou. On 19 April 1572, he and Sir Thomas Smith (1513-1577) signed a vague and unsatisfactory treaty at Blois. Walsingham returned to England in 1573 and was appointed to the office of Secretary of State, jointly with Sir Thomas Smith.

Custodial history:

The Harleian Manuscripts were collected by Robert Harley (1661-1724) and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 1st and 2nd Earls of Oxford, respectively. The material was purchased from the Countess of Oxford and Mortimer and the Duchess of Portland, in 1753, by the British Museum (now the British Library). It is kept as a separate collection catalogued as Harley MSS. 1-7660. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed two small excerpts of Canadian interest from Harley MSS. 260 (No. 120, ff. 205v-206; and No. 175, ff. 295-299).
