The item copied is an address to Charles I, with a covering letter to the Duke of Buckingham, from Robert Hayman (1575-1629), governor of Bristol's Hope settlement in Newfoundland. Hayman argues the inadequacy of private resources and urges royal support for the security and prosperity of the colony and fishery in Newfoundland. The year 1630 is mentioned in a torn prelude to the document which must, however, antedate the deaths of Hayman in 1629 and Buckingham in 1628. Transcripts, 14 pages.

Nicholas, Edward, 1593-1669 : Secretary of State to Charles I and Charles II

Sir Edward Nicholas became secretary to George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628) as warden of the Cinque Ports in 1624, and as Lord High Admiral in 1625. He continued as secretary to the Admiralty commissioners after Buckingham's death and became Clerk of the Council in 1635. He was later Secretary of State to Charles I and Charles II. He lived in Wiltshire and Surrey during the course of his career.

Hayman, Robert, 1575-1629 : Robert Hayman (1575-1629), poet and colonizer, was governor of Bristol's Hope, near Harbour Grace on Conception Bay, Newfoundland, ca. 1618-ca. 1628.

Egerton Manuscripts 2533-2562, which were added to the holdings of the British Library in 1879, are 30 volumes of the official and private papers, 1560-1722, of Sir Edward Nicholas (1593-1669); of his son, Sir John Nicholas (d. 1704), Clerk to the Privy Council; and of his grandson, Edward Nicholas (d. 1726), Treasurer to Queen Mary. Egerton MSS. 2541 is the first of three volumes within the Nicholas papers, which contain miscellaneous historical papers, largely consisting of drafts and copies of warrants and other official documents, 1588-1722. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed one small excerpt (ff. 162-169v) from the volume because of its Canadian interest.
