Stowe MSS. 484-486 constitutes a collection of three volumes of "Returns of His Majesty's Forces", in Germany, North America, the East Indies, Portugal, Gibralter, Minorca, the Channel Islands, the West Indies, in transit, etc., 1762, 1764. Photocopies, 905 pages; transcripts, 10 pages. The photocopied material consists of monthly tables of the officers and men in the different corps of the army, giving their strengths and areas of service. The areas of service are indexed at the front of each return. The material copied includes: Stowe MSS 484, ff. 20v-22; Stowe 485, ff. 18v-20; Stowe 486, ff. 20v-22; Add. MSS. 29256 A-K, ff. 1-220; Add. MSS. 29257 A-M, ff. 1-263; Add. MSS. 29258 A-K, ff. 1-220; Add. MSS. 29259 A-L, ff. 1-242.

Includes the following: Returns in North America, 2 June 1762, 4 pages; returns in North America, 14 July 1762, 4 pages; returns in North America, November 1764, 2 pages; ten monthly returns of H.M. forces for November-December 1768; February-May, July and September-November 1769, 210 pages; twelve monthly returns for January, March, May, July, and September-December 1770; January, March-April, and June 1771, 253 pages; ten monthly returns of H.M. forces, for July-august and October-December 1771; January-March, May, and July 1772, 210 pages; and eleven monthly returns of H.M. Forces, for September and November 1772; June, September and December 1773; March, June and December 1774; April, July & September 1775, 232 pages.

Custodial history:

The Stowe Manuscripts formed part of the collection of manuscripts made by the Grenville family at Stowe, their Buckinghamshire family seat. When Richard Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861), was forced to sell his library in 1849, it was purchased by the 4th Earl of Ashburnham, whose son Bertram, 5th Earl of Ashburnham (1840-1913), sold it to the nation in 1883. The part of the manuscript collection that went to the British Library is kept as a separate collection, catalogued as Stowe MSS. 1-1085. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed small excerpts relating to North America from each of the volumes., Additional Manuscripts 29256-29259 consist of four volumes, containing an imperfect series of monthly "Returns of His Majesty's Forces" at home and abroad, 1768-1775, which were added to the holdings of the British Library in 1872. In 1929, the National Archives of Canada obtained photostat copies of the whole series.
