Nelson, John, 1654-1734 : New England merchant and statesman.

John Nelson (1654-1734) was the son of Robert Nelson and Mary Temple, sister of Sir Thomas Temple, Bart. (1614-1674), whose claims to Nova Scotia he inherited. (In this connection, see MG 21, Lansdowne MSS. 849 and Add. MSS. 19049). Because of his familiarity with New France and Acadia, developed through his trading activities, Nelson was selected in 1682 to visit Quebec to undertake negotiations concerning outstanding grievances between New France and New England.

The Stowe Manuscripts formed part of the collection of manuscripts made by the Grenville family at Stowe, their Buckinghamshire family seat. When Richard Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861), was forced to sell his library in 1849, it was purchased by the 4th Earl of Ashburnham, whose son Bertram, 5th Earl of Ashburnham (1840-1913), sold it to the nation in 1883. The part of the manuscript collection that went to the British Library is kept as a separate collection, catalogued as Stowe MSS. 1-1085. Stowe MSS. 163 is a collection of miscellaneous historical, topographical, and other papers, 1360-1807. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed a small excerpt from the collection (item No. 23, ff. 172-173v), which is of Canadian interest.
