Manners, John, 1721-1770 : Military officer

John Manners, Marquis of Granby (1721-1770), Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards, was educated at Eton and Cambridge. He received his first military commission during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and witnessed the devastation of the highlands at Cullodon. He served in the Seven Years War in Germany in 1758 and was made Commander-in-Chief of the British Contingent in 1759. He acquired high reputation during ensuing campaigns and became a favourite of Prince Ferdinand. He died at the age of 49 in 1770.
