Item is a facsimile of the grant of 21,600 acres to Lt.-Col. Timothy Hierlihy and associates in the Bay St. Louis area of Halifax County, (now Guysborough). According to "A Plan of Surveys made and lands granted... within the district proposed to be called Sydney in Nova Scotia" by Charles Morris, 1785, this tract had been set aside for the Loyal [Royal] Nova Scotia Volunteers in 1784.

Hierlihy, Timothy, 1734-ca. 1797 : Timothy Hierlihy emigrated from Ireland to Connecticut in 1753. He served with provincial forces during the Seven Years' War and at the commencement of the Revolutionary War undertook to recruit loyalist units. These Independent Companies were used in the defence of Prince Edward Island, 1778-1782, and formed as a regiment, the Royal Nova Scotia Volunteers, 1782-1783. Following disbandment of his regiment, Hierlihy settled at Antigonish, N.S.
