Fonds consists of a letter from John Butler of Halifax to Peter Jolliff, Jr. enclosing papers relative to the prosecution and appeal of Robert Linthorne, master of the Phoenix (brigantine), charged with breach of the laws of trade, advising Jolliff to appeal the case to the King in Council. Also included are copies of the proceedings of the Vice Admiralty Court, depositions, statements, and a protest. The Phoenix was registered at Poole, Dorsetshire. The appeal was apparently handled by Joshua Sharpe.
