The first part of the Welland Canal was completed in 1829 to link Lake Ontario with Lake Erie in order to overcome the barrier imposed by Niagara Falls. This required a system of forty wooden locks to deal with the 325 foot difference in lake levels. Other parts of the canal were completed by 1887 with 26 locks.~This film includes: shots of Niagara Falls and the Niagara River; a graphic map of the canal route; a steam ship going through the canal with its funnel belching black smoke; and two large lake freighters passing close to each other in the canal system.~The intertitles mention that the canal was scheduled to be finished in 1928. Shown are: steam-driven shovels, cranes, and high scaffolding; a graphic plan of the old curving canal with the straight line of the new canal superimposed on it; a lake freighter on one of the lakes; the lock to the entrance of Lake Ontario in the new canal system (the construction of this lock having commenced in 1913); constructing the foundation of part of a new lock; a steamer passing down the old canal; construction on canal-prism south of lock 3; steam shovels loading open freight cars with rubble; and a steam engine pulling away a long line of loaded cars. Further footage includes: the canal excavation under a railway bridge; excavation for the lock at Thorold with long ladders leading down into the bottom of a pit; the construction of mitre sills for the lock gates; a view from inside the lock with the walls constructed; a man coming out of one of the culverts while another man with him climbs a ladder to the site and examines the hinges for the intake valve; and a view of the east wall of lock 7 with a crane in the foreground.~The old, new, and present canals are seen at Thorold. A steamship uses the completed canal at Allanburgh. Further construction goes on with a grader at work on canal construction. Small ships move down the canal at Port Colborne. Sequences are seen of large vessels and grain elevators.
