Fonds consists of an incomplete narrative history of the Ermatinger family by Judge C.O. Ermatinger written on the blank pages of a 1897 list of voters for Yarmouth Township, Ont., n.d., 6 pages; genealogical notes, charts and extracts from documents relating to the Ermatinger family of Montreal and Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., including notes on the "Old Stone House" at Sault Ste. Marie, a copy of a letter from Joseph Cheniguy to Hon. John McGill, October 1837, and copies of financial agreements between Charles Oakes Ermatinger and the American Government, photocopy, 64 pages.

Ermatinger (family) : Lawrence Ermatinger (d. 1789), a Swiss merchant, settled at Montreal in approximately 1760, where he engaged in the fur trade with his brother-in-law, Forrest Oakes (d. 1783). His son, Frederick William Ermatinger (1769-1827), was Sheriff of Montreal from 1811 onward, and a founder of the Bank of Montreal in 1817. Frederick William Ermatinger succeeded his uncle, Edward William Gray (1742-1810), as Sheriff and as executor of the estate of Samuel Jacobs. Upon the death of Frederick William, his brother Charles Oakes Ermatinger (1776-1833), and Samuel Gale became executors of the estate.

Charles Oakes Ermatinger became a partner in the North West Company in 1805. His son, Charles Oakes Ermatinger, Jr. (1802-1857) settled at St. Thomas, U.C. Edward Ermatinger (1797-1876) was a grandson of Lawrence Ermatinger. He served with the Hudson's Bay Company from 1818 to 1830, then settled at St. Thomas. His brother, Francis Ermatinger (1798-ca. 1857), also served with the Hudson's Bay Company, 1818-1853, chiefly on the Pacific Coast.
