Leacock, Stephen, 1869-1944 : Author, economist, humorist.

Born in England in 1869, Stephen Leacock came to Canada with his family in 1876. He began his studies at Upper Canada College, where he later taught, 1889-1898. After graduating from the University of Toronto, Leacock received his Ph.D. in political economy from the University of Chicago in 1903 and was appointed lecturer in the Dept. of Economics and Political Science at McGill University. He remained at McGill, where he was appointed head of his department in 1908, until 1936. He published his first book, Elements of Political Science, in 1906.

Although Leacock had a distinguished career as a teacher and writer of scholarly works, it is as a humorist that he became world famous. He published his first book of humour, Literary Lapses, in 1910, followed by Nonsense Novels in 1911 and the classic Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town in 1912. Leacock was a prolific writer, continuing to publish books virtually annually as well as numerous essays and sketches in journals and periodicals in North America and Britain. He was also a popular lecturer, and travelled across Canada and the United States on speaking tours.

Leacock was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1919, won a Governor-General's Award in 1937, and in that same year received the Lorne Pierce Medal.

Original scrapbooks in volume 4 relating to Stephen Leacock's lecture tours have been removed from circulation and replaced by photocopies.

Custodial history:

The Stephen Leacock Memorial Home Board Collection was copied in 1970 from originals in the possession of the Stephen Leacock Memorial Home Board. The Orillia Public Library Collection was copied in 1970 from originals in the possession of the Orillia Public Library. The Stephen Leacock Jr. Collection, originally in the possession of Stephen Leacock Jr. of Orillia, Ontario, was received in 1989. The Barbara Nimmo Collection was received from Stephen Leacock's niece Barbara Nimmo of Michigan, U.S.A., in 1991 and 1992 and from her estate in 1994. Remainder of the collection was received from various sources between 1948 and 1989.
