Lunenburg (N.S.): Early Settlement Records : Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, formerly known as Merliguesche, was named for Brunswick-Lunenburg, the royal house of King George 1 of England. The settlement was home to approximately 50 Acadians as late as 1749. In 1753 the British government recruited 1453 German-speaking protestants from the southwestern Germany and the Montbéliard district of France and Switzerland to settle in the community.
