Item is a lithographic copy, 2 pages, (produced by Clarkes Litho., of Halifax, N.S.) of the Articles of peace originally negotiated at Boston on 15 December 1725 by the Governor of Nova Scotia and various Indians resident in the territory which had formerly been Acadia but now (pursuant to the Treaty of Utrecht) owed allegiance to H.M. George II of England, with the ratifications of those treaty terms signed at Chebucto Harbour, 15 August 1749 and on the Saint John River, 8 September 1749.

Penobscot Indians : The Penobscot Indians belong to the Abnaki confederacy who were active allies of the French against the English. Between 1675 and 1763, as the Abnaki confederacy battled with the English, their population declined due to extermination by war or by disease. Efforts were made by the English to persuade them to receive Protestant missionaries but the offers were rejected, the missions destroyed, and the missionaries attacked. In 1749, while the Abnkai who survived retreated, the Penobscot tribe made a peace treaty with the English, saving themselves and their territory. Catholic Encyclopedia.

The flawed copy was presented by R.P. Gorham. The complete copy was transferred in 1980 from the Library of Parliament.
Both copies are in horizontal storage, container 1.
