Fonds consists of three pilots flying log books, 1917-1918, 1921-1930, 1929-1942, documenting Mercer's service in the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Air Force, Canadian Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force. A diary, April - July 1918, of the early period of his internment in a German prisoner of war camp. Copies of entries from the squadron log of No. 1 Squadron, R.A.F., April 1918. Commissions as a lieutenant in the Canadian Militia, 1919, and a flight lieutenant in the R.C.A.F., 1924. An equitation certificate from the Royal School of Artillery, 1922, and a commissioner of oaths certificate for the province of British Columbia, 1939. An officer's record of services booklet, 1917-1918, and a colour print of the R.C.A.F. ensign as approved by the College of Arms, June 1940. Photographic material depicts the Bristol F.26 and S.E.5a aircraft of the R.F.C./R.A.F., 1917-1918; group photos of officers of the R.F.C./R.A.F., 1918.

Fonds also contains photographs of Mercer's military career.

Biography/Administrative history:

Mercer, George Albert, 1896-1967 : George Mercer, Air Force officer, enlisted in the 2nd Cyclist Corps in December, 1914 and served in Britain and France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force until August, 1917 when he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. After flight training in France and England, Mercer joined No. 1 Squadron, Royal Air Force in April, 1918. The same month he was shot down by enemy ground fire near Armentieres, France and was interned in a German prisoner of war camp until the end of the war. Repatriated to England in December, 1918, he returned to Canada in April, 1919.

Mercer joined the Canadian Air Force in 1921 as a Flying Officer and was appointed to the permanent Royal Canadian Air Force in April 1924. He was promoted Flight Lieutenant, April 1927, Squadron Leader, June, 1934, Wing Commander, April 1939, and Group Captain, September, 1940. Mercer was honourably released from the R.C.A.F. on 13 July, 1943. He died at Vancouver, B.C., in 1967.
