Fonds consists of records of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women: reports, correspondence, minutes; records relating to the Business and Professional Women's Associations: briefs, minutes, newsletters and correspondence; material relating to Ontario Women's Resource Centre; the Advisory Council on the Status of Women: reports and papers; National Action Committee on the Status of Women: reports, briefs and publications; scientific and technical material; personal material; subject files reflecting MacGill's varied interests; and a pamphlet for the order of service for E.G. MacGill's funeral, Knox College Chapel, University of Toronto.

Photographic material relates to Elsie Gregory MacGill's career as an aeronautical engineer, the Royal Commission on the status of women, and the Canadian federation of Business and professional Women.

Also included is an electroplate printing block and plate and photo mechanical process and embossed printing proofs related to publicity photographs of Elsie Gregory MacGill.

The fonds also contains a sound recording of a biographical sketch of Elsie Gregory MacGill, part of the radio series, "Living with Flair" designed to give miniature biographical sketches of interesting women in theatre, arts, sciences, business or community services. It was broadcast on CKFM Radio, Toronto, 1964.

MacGill, Elsie Gregory, 1905-1980 : Elizabeth Muriel "Elsie" Gregory MacGill, engineer and community leader, was the daughter of Helen Gregory MacGill, a Judge of the Vancouver Juvenile Court and an early feminist. MacGill graduated from the University of Toronto in 1927 with a degree in electrical engineering, and from the University of Michigan (1929) with a Masters degree in aeronautical engineering. She was the first woman to graduate from both of these universities in this field. MacGill was afflicted by a polio-like illness during her studies which left her with a physical disability. MacGill was employed as an aeronautical engineer for Fairchild Aircraft Ltd., 1934-1937 where she worked on aerodynamics and stress calculations, flight testing and production of commercial aircraft. In 1937 she joined the Canadian Car and Foundry Co. Ltd. and was responsible for the design, testing and certification of the Maple Leaf Trainer II.

During the Second World War she was responsible for the Canadian production of the Hawker Hurricane Fighter aircraft for the United Kingdom and the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver divebomber for the U.S. Navy. In 1943 she opened an office in Toronto as a consulting aeronautical engineer and became the Canadian Technical Advisor to the United Nations Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). She was a Commissioner on the Ontario Building Materials Evaluation Commission, 1976-1980. For her technical expertise MacGill has won many honours and awards.

MacGill was an advocate for the status of, and critical issues affecting, women and was also very active in women's organizations. She was president of the Ontario Business and Professional Women's Clubs, 1956-1958, and the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, 1962-1964, and served as a Commissioner for the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, 1967-1970. She was author of My Mother the Judge, 1956.

General note:

The majority of the material was received from Elsie Gregory MacGill in 1974 and from her estate in 1983. A pamphlet containing the Order of Service for E.G. MacGill's funeral was received from Miss Lena McClure in 1980. Some of the photographs were received in 1983 from Ann Soulsby of Toronto, Ontario. More photographs were received in 2022 from Rachel Schneewind of Providence, RI, USA.
