2.4 m of textual records : transcripts.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:War Office 1 consists of 1,138 volumes of original despatches, letters, and papers for the period 1732 to 1868, addressed to the Secretary at War, and after 1794, to the Secretary of State for War. The National Archives has copied only those portions of WO 1 directly relating to Canada including microfilm and transcript selections of military despatches, letters and papers sent from governors, lieutenant-governors, commanders of the forces and other military officers and private individuals in North America together with letters from public departments in Great Britain. The eighteenth century correspondence relates for the most part to the wars in North America.
The microfilmed records, dated 1755 to 1800 and 1840 to 1855, appear on microfilm reels B-967 to B-969, B-996 to B-1000, B-3059 to B-3078. The transcripts, dated 1755 to 1800, and 1840 to 1848, appear on microfilm reels C-13062 to C-13068.Additional name(s):Additional information:Arrangement note:From 1800 to 1840, the correspondence was generally filed with those of the Colonial Office (see MG 11). Those items sent from the 1840s onward relate generally to the military business of the Colonial Office. The letters in WO 1 are organized under the various military stations from which they were sent.
