Archibald, Edward Mortimer, Sir, 1810-1884 : Sir Edward Mortimer Archibald, born in Colchester County, N.S., was educated at Pictou Academy. He was called to the bar in 1831. He was registrar of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, 1832-1848; clerk of the Legislature, 1842-1848; Attorney General and Judge of the Supreme Court, 1848-1855; and British Consul at New York, 1857-1883. Among events in which he was actively involved were the United States Civil War, the Alabama claims and reports on the Fenian movements.
