Fonds consists of a petition submitted by Capt. Samuel Mackay, Royal American Regiment, to General Allan MacLean, in 1778, summarizing his services since 1775, particularly at St. John and Ticonderoga, and the treatment he received at the hands of General Carleton, 6 pages. Accompanying the petition is a letter of Samuel Mackay to General Maclean, and one of Maclean to Francis Mackay, concerning the presentation of the petition, 2 pages.

Mackay, Samuel, 1737-1779 : Samuel Mackay was the son of Stephen Mackay, a Scottish mercenary officer. Samuel entered the Dutch army as a coronet in 1748, and became an ensign in the 60th Regiment, Royal American, in 1756. He served throughout the Seven Years' War and the early years of the American War of Independence. In 1771, his brother Francis (fl. 1756-1784) resigned his office of Surveyor-General of Woods in his favor.

Copied in 1940 from a typescript in the possession of Stephen Papineau of St. Eustache, Que., through the courtesy of D.B. Papineau of Quebec. The memorial had been found in pamphlet form and copied in 1890 by John Mackay, of Cambridge, Mass., while pursuing genealogical research in the Boston Public Library.
