Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, accounts, and land records relating to Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres' estates of Minudie (the Elysian Fields), Maccan, Nappan and Tatamagouche and to DesBarres' surveys and administration of Cape Breton. Also included is the will of J.F.W. DesBarres and photocopies of transcripts of the wills of DesBarres' daughter, Isabella Mathilda, DesBarres' daughter-in-law, Mrs. Augustus Wallet DesBarres, and of James Luttrell DesBarres. The fonds also contains newspaper clippings on DesBarres' career and biographical and genealogical notes on DesBarres, his grandson Thomas Cutler DesBarres, and a few notes on Thomas Ashfield, DesBarres' secretary. Series 1 to 5 are available on microfilm, reels C-1455 to C-1461.

Fonds also consists of the following microfilmed material: correspondence, petitions, maps and charts, estate records and printed material relating to the career and property of J.F.W. DesBarres, [1754]-1875. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1106.

Fonds also consists of a watercolour entitled "Castle Frederick, Falmouth", which depicts J.F.W. DesBarres' own home in Nova Scotia; two portraits of DesBarres, one in watercolour and one in pastel; a painting of Robert Alden, D.D., and twenty-five prints, views of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Maine and Massachusetts, some of which have been cut from original plates and imprints originally published in "Atlantic Neptune."

Records were received or copied from various sources between 1916 and 1980: series 1 was received in 1922-1923; series 2 was received in 1916 from Lawrence J. Burpee of Ottawa; series 3 was copied from originals held by the Public Record Office and the British Museum; series 4 was copied in 1923 from originals held by Rev. Thomas DesBarres of Herford, England; series 5 was received in 1958; in series 6 the will of J.F.W. DesBarres, 1773, and warrant to DesBarres, 1786, were received in 1976 from Mrs. W.B. Bate of Ottawa and the remainder of the series was copied in 1865 from originals held by W.F.C. DesBarres of Brantford, Ont; the material on microfilm reel A-1106 was filmed in 1980 from the originals held by Mrs. David Micklem of Essex, England, through the courtesy of Christopher Terrell, National Maritime Museum, London; one portrait of J.F.W. DesBarres was received in 1963 from John Joliffe Tufnell of Essex, England; the rest of the graphic material was received from Dorette DesBarres Bate, Ann Marie Clemens and William D. March, and an unidentified DesBarres descendant living in Ottawa.
This fonds also includes 2 plates from the Atlantic Neptune which were transferred to the cartographic section. No accession number could be found so the material was not integrated.
Fonds also consists of 25 prints that have been transferred between the former Picture Division and National Map Collection several times. They have now been transferred to the Art section.

Textual records: Series 1-5 are available on microfilm, reels C-1455 to C-1461. The finding aid has also been microfilmed but without the introduction and shelf list. The relevant pages of the finding aid appear at the beginning of each volume.

Library and Archives Canada holds several copies of The Atlantic Neptune in its collection, including the "Amherst set", as well as 29 original copper printing plates of some charts and views included in this atlas (16 maps on 22 plates and 6 views on 7 plates). They are currently described in Aurora (OCLC 1007438429; 1007270458).
Some maps from The Atlantic Neptune have also been described individually in Mikan and Aurora.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, has made accessible all of the charts and views of their copy of the Atlantic Neptune and variant from the Stevens collection of Atlantic Neptnue plates.
