Fonds includes personal and professional information, 1933-1995; publications and papers with related correspondence, 1954-1993; University of Western Ontario, teaching and administrative material, 1937-1992; subject files on research interests, research grants, lectures, hospitals and training programmes, and evaluations for the universities of Guelph, Alberta and Minnesota, 1969-1990. It includes papers on the International Congress for Microbiology, 1956-1994; the American Society for Microbiology, 1952-1994; the Bergey's Manual Trust, 1919, 1956-1994; the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) that includes the International Committee for Systematic Bacteriology - ICSB, 1973-1994 and the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology - IJSB, 1982-1995; and other associations, 1946-1993. The fonds includes general correspondence with colleagues in microbiology from all around the world, 1946-1992.

The fonds contains photographs including a portrait of R.G.E. Murray and group photographs from the meeting of the Bergey's Manual Trust and other organizations, 1970-1993; portraits of A.G. Lockhead, 1960; Dr. Norman E. Gibbons; group portraits of Pathology Class, University of Cambridge, England, 1941; Dr. Murray's class at the University of Western Ontario, [ca. 1967]; Erwin Neter Testimonial Day, Buffalo, New York, 1979; and Rossiter Research Conference, New Hampton, U.S.A., 1981.

The fonds also contains a sound recording of a memorial service for Dr. Roger James Rossiter at the University of Western Ontario, 28 February 1976.

Murray, R.G.E. (Robert George Everitt), 1919- : R.G.E. Murray was born in England, the son of E.D.G. Murray. He was educated at McGill University (MD, 1943) and Cambridge (MA, 1945). He returned to Canada and joined the Dept. of Bacteriology (later Microbiology) and Immunology at the University of Western Ontario (UWO). He was a professor there from 1949 to 1984 as well as chairman of the Department 1949-74. Murray was on numerous university committees. Upon his retirement in 1984 he became professor emeritus. Murray received honorary doctorates from UWO and the University of Guelph.

Murray was an early user of the electron microscope and was a recognized authority on photomicrographs. Much of his research was on bacteria especially their cell walls and associated proteins. Murray was also very interested in the nomenclature and classification of bacteria. He has published 110 articles on many aspects of microbiology. Murray has corresponded with many of the leading microbiologists from around the world.

Murray was President of the Canadian Society of Microbiology 1952-53, the American Society of Microbiology 1972-73 and Chairman of the International Committee for Systematic Bacteriology 1982-90. He continued his father's role in Bergey's Manual Trust, as a trustee 1964-91 and was its chairman 1976-90. Murray was Editor of the Canadian Journal of Microbiology 1954-60, and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Bacteriology 1951-56, and 1980-86, Editor of Microbiological Reviews 1969-79, Associate Editor of International Journal of Systematic Biology 1982-90 and its Editor since 1991.

As a result of his work, Murray has won awards from numerous biological associations, as well as the Flavelle Medal from the Royal Society of Canada.
