Fonds consists of agreements; catalogues; corporate records; financial papers; minutes; miscellaneous material; and material relating to Vancouver Company.

The fonds also contains photographs of members of Henry Birks and Sons Ltd., and representatives of the company at various meetings; members of the Birks family; the family's business concerns; and goldsmiths, silversmiths and their creations.

Henry Birks and Sons : In 1857, Henry Birks, jeweler, became a clerk with the jewellery and silverware firm of Savage and Lyman of Montreal. By 1868, he had become a partner. In 1879, Henry Birks then entered into business by himself and by 1887, the first Birks factory was started. In 1893, Henry Birks' three sons William, Harry and Gerald were admitted into the business as partners with the firm's name being changed to Henry Birks and Sons.

In 1901, the firm opened its first branch in Ottawa, by buying out Olmsted and Hurdman and it further expanded in 1903 to Winnipeg. In 1905, Ryrie Brothers of Toronto and Henry Birks and Sons were amalgamated and in that same year the business was made into a Limited Company, remaining however, a closed corporation. In 1907, the firm expanded by buying out the business of George E. Trorey and Company of Vancouver. The Ottawa branch was enlarged in 1911, when the company bought A. Rosenthal and Sons.

In 1924, the first overseas branch was opened in London, England. Henry Birks and Sons further expanded by purchasing J.E. Wilmot and Company of Ottawa in 1929 and G.E. Seifert and Sons of Quebec in 1930. The company was amalgamated in 1933 with Ellis Brothers Limited of Toronto and D.R. Dingwall of Winnipeg. By the 1940's, Henry Birks and Sons had stores in every major Canadian City.
