Item is a selection from the Auckland fonds: Additional Manuscript 34462, Volume 51 of the 60 volumes of Auckland papers, which were added to the holdings of the British Library in 1893. In 1955, the National Archives of Canada purchased a microfilm copy of a small excerpt from it (ff. 226-255v). It is a report on the Newfoundland fisheries, 1786, by the Lords of the Committee of Council appointed for the consideration of all matters relating to Trade and Foreign Plantations, in response to an order-in-council of 9 December 1785. This material is located on microfilm reel A-306.

Eden, William, 1744-1814 : Statesman and diplomatist

William Eden, (1744-1814) was the third son of Sir Robert Eden, third baronet, of Windlestone Hall, Durham, and his wife Mary, née Davison. He was born on 3 April 1744 and was educated at Eton and Oxford. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple, 1769. Changing from a legal to a political career, he devoted himself particularly to legal and economic questions and soon became an acknowledged authority on these subjects. He became under-secretary of state, 1772; M.P. for Woodstock, 1774; a first lord of the Board of Trade and Plantations, 1776. In 1780, when his old school friend, Lord Carlisle, went to Ireland as viceroy, he accompanied him as chief secretary and was sworn to the privy council of that country. He established the National Bank of Ireland, and became vice-treasurer of Ireland, 1783.

After negotiating a commercial treaty with France in 1786, he was created Baron Auckland in the Irish peerage. In 1790 he concluded a treaty on the settlement of Holland with the Emperor Leopold and the King of Prussia. He served as ambassador extraordinary at The Hague during the French Revolution and in 1793 was created Baron Auckland of West Auckland, Durham. From 1798 to 1804, he served as post-master general under both Pitt and Addington. He was excluded from Pitt's second administration, but was president of the Board of Trade in Grenville's ministry of "All the Talents", 1806-1807. He died on 28 May 1814.
