Fonds consists of Eight insurance books of J[ohn] Janson, kept at Lloyds, Oct. 1804-Dec. 1810 and 1815, showing risks taken and premiums received during the war with France. The contents are arranged under headings such as To or From America, Newfoundland, West Indies, etc., with an index to the headings in each volume. Letters in the last column of the earlier volumes apparently mark the loss or capture of vessels. At the end of the last book are a few papers, 1819-1820, found in the pocket of Volume 1, relating to the purchase and sale of English and French stocks for William Janson (ff. 275-281). This material is located on microfilm reels A-1539 to A-1541.

Janson, J. (John), fl. 1804-1815 : Marine underwriter at Lloyds

No information is currently available on J[ohn] Janson (fl. 1804-1815), except that he was a marine underwriter eminent at Lloyds in the early nineteenth century. Lloyds was founded as an association of marine underwriters towards the end of the seventeenth century, and originated in a coffee-house run by a certain Edward Lloyd in Tower Street, London. It was legally known as "The Society formerly held at Lloyd's Coffee House, in the Royal Exchange in the city of London, for the effecting of Marine Insurance." For many years it remained a society of private underwriters, but the association was eventually incorporated by act of Parliament in 1871. In 1911, the act was amended to enable the society to extend its activities, so that today practically any risk can be insured with Lloyds. Having been housed for 150 years in the Royal Exchange, the society moved to Leadenhall Street in 1928.

Additional Manuscripts 34669-34676 were presented to the British Library in 1894 by the economic statistician John Towne Danson (1817-1898) of Grasmere, who had received them from [J.W.] Janson in 1890, and used them together with the books of two other eminent underwriters in writing his Our Next War. In 1983, the National Archives of Canada purchased a microfilm copy of them.
