Collection consists of English translations of two examples of letters relating to hunting, written in European characters by missionary-instructed Tadoussac or Saguenay Indians living 50 leagues below Quebec. Given by Dr. Longmore, apothecary to the army, to Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), President of the Royal Society, and by Banks to his friend William Marsden in 1797.

Marsden, William, 1754-1836 : Orientalist, numismatist.

William Marsden (1754-1836) was born at Verval, County Wicklow, Ireland, on 16 November 1754. He was the sixth son and tenth child of John Marsden by his second wife, Eleanor, née Bagnall. He entered the service of the East India Company in 1771 and, during his eight years of residence in Sumatra, served as sub-secretary and later secretary to the government. He later became second secretary, 1795, and then secretary, 1804, to the Admiralty. In 1783 he was elected fellow of the Royal Society, to which he subsequently became treasurer and vice-president. He was a friend of Sir Joseph Banks.

Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was born, 13 February 1743, at Argyle Street, London, England. He was the only son of William Banks of Revesby Abbey in Lincolnshire, and his wife, Sarah, daughter of William Bate. He was educated at Harrow, Eton, and Christ Church, Oxford. Having, at the age of fourteen, conceived a passionate interest in botany, he studied natural history. In 1766, he was elected fellow of the Royal Society and in the same year went to Newfoundland to collect plants.

He accompanied Captain Cook on his expedition around the world in the Endeavour, 1768-1771, making valuable natural history collections. In 1772, he visited Iceland. He was created a baronet in 1781, invested with the order of the Bath in 1795, and sworn of the Privy Council in 1797. From 1778 to 1820, he was President of the Royal Society. All his life he was a notable patron of science and bequeathed his collections and library to his librarian, Robert Brown, for his life, with reversion to the British Museum.

Additional Manuscript 11038 is a collection of miscellaneous philological papers, which was presented to the British Library by William Marsden and added to its collection in 1837. In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed ff. 6 and 11-12, which bear a note regarding their origin: "Given to me in Feby. 1797 by Sr. Jos. Banks, who appears to have recd. it from Dr. Longmore, Apothy. to the Army."
