Colonial Office 485 is composed of registers of out-letters for the "subject" class of emigration. CO 485 is available on microfilm, reels B-1647 to B-1649 and B-1659 to B-1660.

Vols. 1-5 and 7-8 follow basic classification and registry procedures. The out-letters registered in the "Despatches" categories are generally organized according to colony and then chronologically in order of receipt. Vols. 6 and 9 are subject indexes to the emigration out-letters (or possibly are subject indexes to vols. 1-5 and 7-8 respectively.) These two volumes each contain subject indexes. The first one is a short alphabetical list of various subjects and names with two columns for the subject and page and no indication as to where the actual page number can be found. The second one is a detailed alphabetical subject index with correspondence arranged chronologically under each subject heading. In this second index the same type of information is provided as described for the other volumes of this class.

CO 485 may be used as a limited finding aid for some emigration out-letters filed in CO 384, or in the appropriate "colony" classes of original correspondence.
