Fonds consists of Dufferin-Carnarvon correspondence, private correspondence between Dufferin as governor general and Carnarvon as colonial secretary, 1874-1878; general correspondence relating to Canada 1874-1878, 1885; confidential prints, 1854-1886; papers as under-secretary of state for the colonies, 1858-1859; correspondence as colonial secretary, 1866-1867; colonial papers, registered series confidential prints, cuttings and memoranda miscellaneous papers, 1866-1879; and correspondence including letters from Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, Lord Dufferin, Lord Lorne, 1868-1880. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels B-119 to B-120, B-1066 to B-1069 and B-2581 to B-2587.

Herbert, Henry Howard Molyneux, fl. 1858-1886 : Lord Carnarvon was born in London and educated at Oxford. He entered the House of Lords as under-secretary of state for the colonies, 1858-1859, colonial secretary, 1866-1867 and 1874-1875 and introduced the British North America Act in the House of Lords in 1867. He was chairman of a Colonial Defence Committee, 1879-1882 and an active supporter of the Imperial Federation League after its formation in 1884. From 1885 to 1886 he was lord lieutenant of Ireland. See: Encyclopedia Canadiana, Vol. 2, p. 250.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid contains a list of correspondence arranged chronologically giving author and subject for volumes 1-47 of the General Correspondence and a general description of volumes 50-52. Reels B-1066 and B-1067. There is also a general description of volumes 69-131, Confidential Prints, 1854-1855 reels B-1067 to B-1069, and a general description of the papers of the under-secretary of State for the Colonies, 1858-1859, volumes 132-133. General note:

The papers of the fourth Earl of Carnarvon were presented to the Public Record Office in 1926 by his widow. The original correspondence in the National Archives was received in 1977.
