Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence concerning the North West Rebellion: Louis Riel's correspondence, 1884-1885; correspondence with political and military persons regarding the North West; files relating to the Dept. of the Interior, and Indian Affairs, subject files containing material on Banff Park development, geological surveys, and personal correspondence with C.P. Cowell regarding mining claims, 1877-1899. The original papers are available on microfilm reels C-2161, C-2162, C-4595 and C-4596.

In addition, there is microfilmed material originating in the Glenbow-Alberta Institute Archives, 1861-1926: general papers, 1861-1876; papers relating to the Lieutenant-Governor of the North West Territories and Indian Commissioner, 1879-1881; Minister of the Interior, 1888-1892; Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, and private papers, 1892-1926. This microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-2815 to M-2817.

Dewdney, E. (Edgar), 1835-1916 : Edgar Dewdney was born in Devonshire, England and immigrated to British Columbia in 1859, working as a surveyor and civil engineer. He was a member of the British Columbia Assembly, 1869-1872, a Conservative member of the House of Commons, 1872-1879 and 1888-1892. He served as Indian commissioner for Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, 1879-1888, lieutenant-governor of the Northwest Territories, 3 December 1881 - 3 July 1888, minister of the Interior and superintendent general of Indian Affairs, 1888-1892, and lieutenant-governor of British Columbia, 17 October 1892 - 30 November 1897. Following retirement from politics, he became a mining broker and financial agent at Victoria, B.C. See: Directory of Parliament, p. 166.
