Fonds consists of articles and lectures on biological and general scientific topics including food preservation, agricultural topics, complex macromolecular structures, etc.; correspondence as director of Applied Biology Division, NRC, covering biological research, administration, regional laboratories and post doctoral fellow training; National Research Council progress reports on scientific work including emergency ship, refrigeration, Prairie Regional Laboratory role of NRC in Canadian science and foreign scientific exchanges; international work, material related international, studies and conferences; Canadian Committee for the International Biological Programme, correspondence subject files; reference files.

The fonds also contains photographs of International Symposium: Algae and the Environment, and the International Workshop on Lipoproteins, attended by W.H. Cook with photos accompanying Laboratory Investigations Report on frost formation-refrigeration units, assembling NRC's wartime emergency refrigeration units.

Fond consists of two architectural drawings: one item pertaining to the air distribution ducts for emergency refrigeration on ships, prepared by the National Research Council, Ottawa, 1941; and an item about ventilation for an entomological building in Belleville Ont, prepared by Sheldon's Ltd., Galt, Ont., 1935.

Cook, William Harrison, 1903- : W.H. Cook, food technologist and biochemist, was born in Alnwick, England and immigrated to Canada in 1912. He graduated from the Claresholm (Alberta) School of Agriculture, the University of Alberta and from Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Chemistry, 1931. He joined the newly established Applied Biology Division of the National Research Council (NRC) working on the transport of perishable foods and refrigerated storage. In 1941 Cook became the Director of the division. During the Second World War he oversaw research on the preservation and transportation of bacon, poultry and eggs. Cook also designed an emergency system of refrigerating ship holds to transport perishable foods.

Cook was involved in the formation of the NRC Prairie Regional Laboratory in Saskatoon which functioned as a branch of the Applied Biology Division from 1948 to 1952. With the swing towards pure research in the 1950s, Cook was able to renew his interest in complex macromolecules especially those found in egg yolks. Cook retired as Director of the Bioscience Division in 1968 and was made NRC's first Executive Director. From 1970 to 1974 he was the Director General of the Canadian Committee for the International Biological Programme. In 1977 NRC published Cook's memoirs "My Fifty Years with NRC, 1924-1974".

Cook participated in international studies in Europe, South and Central America. He represented the NRC at a number of UNESCO and Commonwealth Human Ecology foundation Conferences as well as at numerous scientific meetings. He was a long time member of the Royal Society of Canada, serving as its secretary 1950-1953 an its president 1962-1963.
