The fonds includes records relating to Dr. J. Wendell MacLeod's career in the areas of international health, medical education, university health insurance and community health. His speeches, published and unpublished papers, letters of recommendation and correspondence cover a broad spectrum of subjects from clinical medicine, through medical education to health systems and social goals. As a recognized expert in social aspects of health care and education, there are materials on the various universities, organizations, councils and boards in which MacLeod served as consultant and advisor. There are materials regarding his concern about third world medical care in Haiti and Cuba. His interest in maintaining the memory of Dr. Norman Bethune and his subsequent participation in various Chinese friendship groups are also documented.

Photographic material depicts facets and personalities from Dr. MacLeod's professional life and activities, his family and his friends.

MacLeod, J. Wendell, 1905-2001 : Medical Doctor.

Dr. John Wendell MacLeod, physician, was born in 1905 in Kingsbury, Quebec and graduated in medicine at McGill University in 1930. MacLeod practised in Montreal and became a member of the Montreal Group for the Security of the People's Health, working closely with Norman Bethune, Francis McNaughton and Libbie Park among others. During the Second World War, MacLeod served in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, achieving the rank of Surgeon Commander and receiving the Order of the British Empire (Military Division). MacLeod and his wife, Jessie McGeachy (1905-1966), practised medicine at the Winnipeg Clinic following the war.

In 1952 MacLeod became the first dean of the new medical college at the University of Saskatchewan. He fashioned an effective and innovative medical school that responded uniquely to the social goals of the province. The provincial government consulted him in developing their health insurance plan and he publicly supported the government during the doctor's strike of 1960.

In 1962 MacLeod organized and directed the secretariat of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges (ACMC) in Ottawa until 1970. During the 1960's he helped found the Pan American Federation of Associations of Medical Schools and participated in the Millbank Memorial Fund's Fellowship Program for community-oriented teachers in social and preventive medicine in the Americas.

On retirement in 1970, MacLeod served the Pan American Health Organization for ten months as resident consultant in medical education to the medical school in Haiti. He later reviewed the literature on health service experience in China and Cuba for the International Development Research Center. He also assisted Health and Welfare Canada in the development of immigration standards.

Dr. MacLeod has maintained an interest in and promoted the memory of Dr. Norman Bethune. He visited China as a member of the Canadian delegation from the Bethune Memorial Committee of Montreal in 1973 and the Canada-China Friendship Societies of Ontario in 1978. He co-authored the book Bethune; the Montreal Years: an informal portrait (1978) with Libbie Park and Stanley Ryerson and organized the Bethune Foundation Conference, "Bethune, his Times and Legacy" at McGill University in 1979.

Dr. MacLeod has received honorary degrees from four Canadian universities. He received the 1980 Duncan Graham award of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for his services to medical education. In that same year he was also invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
