Fonds consists of Museum of Science and Technology files relating to the lobbying for, and foundation of, the National Museum of Science and Technology, 1956-1969; information technology and standardization subject files, containing journal articles, photocopies from books, product manuals, advertising material, government and personal correspondence, memoranda, reports and standards, n.d., 1922-1985; Dunn's correspondence and memos on the development of modular steel shelving, paper sizes and keyboard standardization for the Dept. of Supply and Services 1967-1975; research material on selected iron works and foundries in the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario particularly the Marmora Iron Works 1818-1992; and historical and geneological research on the role of the Leonard Family in the development of iron working from 12th century France to 19th century Ontario, 1851-1994.

The fonds contains files on research and proposed reconstruction of the McLaren Mill (Wakefield, Quebec ), Watson's Mill (Manotick, Ontario) and the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum (Almonte, Ontario); Dunn's editing work for the 'Historical Metallurgy Notes' of the 'CIM Bulletin' and 'Tools and Technology' of the American Precision Museum, 1979-1985; and material related to the British-American mechanical engineer George H. Middelton, (fl.1894-1948).

The fonds contains photographs of iron mines, ironworks, and iron foundries located in Ontario and Quebec, [ca. 1867-1978]; and homes and mills associated with the Leonard family of ironworkers at Pontypool, Wales, and West Bromwich, England. The fonds also contains a sound recording made by the National Research Council entitled, The headless musician, n.d., and technical drawings of power hammers built by Peter Pilkington Ltd. Engineers, Lancashire UK, 1917-1924.

Dunn, Arthur D., 1914- : Arthur Dunn was born in Bath, England. After training as an engineer, he went into manufacturing where he eventually headed production at a large manufacturing company. During World War II he was engaged in ballistics research. In 1948 Dunn immigrated to Canada where he worked in a variety of technical fields ranging from electronics to metal molding. Dunn joined the Department of Defence Production in 1958 where he became involved in information handling and standardization. When the Department was reorganized, eventually becoming part of the Department of Supply and Service in 1969, Dunn was transferred to the Canadian Government Standards Board.

His projects included recommending standards for paper and envelope sizes, automation of information storage and transmission, keyboards to meet Canadian requirements and designing storage shelving for government records. He was a member of several committees of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the International Standards Organization (ISO). In 1971 Dunn published a pamphlet "Notes on the Standardization of Papers Sizes" which had a very large distribution world-wide. After his retirement from government service in 1974, Dunn became a private consultant on standardization.

Dunn was also an advocate of a National Museum of Science and Technology which was established in 1967. Dunn was involved in the proposed restoration of the McLaren flour mill in Wakefield, Quebec, owned by the National Capital Commission. He also worked on the history and development of Watson's Mill at Manotick, Ontario, which was owned by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, in the early 1990s. Dunn was involved in the formation of the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in Almonte, Ontario in 1980-1982 and was its technical director 1992-1993.

Dunn did considerable archival and archaeological research on the Marmora Iron Works in Marmora, Ontario (fl.1820-1880). He also researched the Leonard family which had been involved in metalworking since 12th century France. Dunn was the first editor of "Historical Metallurgy Notes" of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's "Bulletin", 1979-1982 and also editor of the American Precision Museum's "Tools and Technology", 1982-1985.
