Colonial Office 305 is for Vancouver Island the first of the six classes normally assigned to a geographically defined collection, and follows the usual system of arrangement for "colony" classes. The entire class is available on microfilm reels B-233 to B-251 and consists of correspondence and despatches from Vancouver Island, plus drafts of out-going correspondence from the Colonial Office.

The class includes an unusually large number of drafts of out-going correspondence. Only volume 16 is irregular in that it is a special subject volume devoted to the "Public Accounts 1857-1860". An index is provided at the beginning of the volume, while most of the remaining volumes have indexes placed at the end of each volume.
