Colonial Office 227 is a "colony" class of entry books. While following a basically chronological organization, the categories "Despatches", "Public Offices" and "Miscellaneous" or "Individuals" do not appear in this class. The entire class is available on microfilm, reels B-1275 to B-1277.

Volume 1 (1769-1793) in large measure provides copies of correspondence, commissions, and instructions communicated to the colony by the Board of Trade. Volumes 2 and 3 (1769-1781) comprise copies of correspondence from the Secretary of State and from the office responsible for colonial affairs; however, they also include copies of some in-letters from governors. Précis books, similar to those found in CO 43 are provided in volumes 4 to 6 (1789-1790, 1794-1795, 1801-1807). The out-letters are often entered on the right-hand pages and the in-letters on the left. Occasionally, related despatches will face each other. Volumes 7 to 12 (1801-1872) consist mainly of despatches from the Secretary of State. Volumes 1 and 7-12 include internal indexes giving the date, authors, a brief subject description and the old manuscript pagination.
