Winnipeg. Manitoba. Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Synagogue, est. 1889 : Congregation Shaarey Zedek is the oldest with continuous service to a Jewish Community in Western Canada. At a meeting on 6 August 1889 groups within Winnipeg's small Jewish Community voted to re-unite and to erect a new house of worship to be named Shaarey Zedek (the gates of righteousness). The synagogue was built at the corner of Henry Avenue and King Street.

In 1913 Shaarey Zedek and Shaarey Shomayim amalgamated. The latter's synagogue on Dagmar Street was enlarged to seat 700, including a women's gallery. The congregation and the services the synagogue offered the community grew steadily under Rabbis Herbert Samuel, 1914-1926, Solomon Frank, 1926-1947 and Milton Aron, 1947-1966. The present Shaarey Zedek synagogue was completed in 1949. Its opening led to an intensification of the religious, social, cultural and educational services offered by the synagogue.
